International football powerhouses will square off Tuesday in Munich, Germany, in a UEFA Euro 2024 semifinal that will have the feel of a final.
Spain and France are among the most successful international soccer teams in the world. Spain is taking aim at a record fourth European championship; France — which has played in the last two World Cup finals, winning in 2018 — is vying for a third Euro title. In all three previous knockout stage games between France and Spain at the Euros, the winners have gone on to become European champions.
Spain has been the more impressive side so far at Euro 2024. It is the only squad to have won all five of its matches, and the team's 11 goals are the most of any of the four semifinalists. Dani Olmo and Fabian Ruiz have scored two goals apiece for Spain.
France, meanwhile, has earned no style points for its road to the semifinals. The team has managed to score just three goals — two via own goals and a third on a penalty kick. France's goal-scoring superstar Kylian Mbappe broke his nose in the team's Euro 2024 opener against Austria and has had to play with a mask ever since. Mbappe has just one goal at Euro 2024 — the aforementioned penalty kick.
Spain will be without three key players against France: midfielder Pedri (knee injury), center back Robin Le Normand (yellow card accumulation) and fullback Dani Carvajal (red card).
The Spain-France winner will meet the winner of Wednesday's other semifinal between England and the Netherlands. The UEFA Euro 2024 final is Sunday at Berlin's historic Olympiastadion.
